BLACKBURN ROVERS midfielder Steven Reid could be back in action early next month after being given the green light to step up his rehabilitation programme.
The Republic of Ireland international has not kicked a ball in anger since damaging his back in the opening week of the season.
But after six weeks of total rest, the former Millwall man has now been given the go-ahead to resume light training, which means he could be on target for a first team return at some point early in the New Year.
"We've had some good news on Steven," said manager Mark Hughes.
"He went to see a specialist earlier this week and he's been given the go-ahead to start his rehab again.
"Obviously, he's just spent six weeks doing absolutely nothing so hopefully he'll now step things up and get back very quickly."
Asked when Reid is likely to return, Hughes added: "We'll have to be guided by the medical people and Steven himself on that."
