SEAN Dyche has told new goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Alex Cisak that the battle is on to feature in Burnley’s first game of the season – with no pre-determined pecking order.

The Clarets brought in Heaton from Bristol City in May before snapping up fellow free agent Cisak a week ago.

Cisak, whose previous first team experience has been in League One and League Two, is widely expected to start as number two to Heaton when the Clarets open their season at home to Bolton on August 3.

But Dyche has made it clear to the duo that they will both be given an opportunity in pre-season to fight for the shirt, and that neither is guaranteed a place. Asked whether Heaton would be number one the Clarets boss said: “When I bring players in it’s never case of, ‘You’re this and you’re that’.

“I have always said that players have to show in pre-season that they should play.

“I think that is the way you should do things.”

Cisak has joined Burnley after coming to the end of his contract at Oldham, having previously had spells with Oxford, Tamworth, Accrington Stanley and Portsmouth.

But Dyche believes the 24-year-old Australian is hungry to prove himself worth a place in the Clarets team.

“I like players who place as much demand on themselves as I do on them,” he said.

“We want competition in all areas of the field but particularly in that position because there is only one jersey.

“Some other players can play in two or three positions but for a goalkeeper it’s not like that.”

Burnley return to training on Tuesday and the Clarets reported no further progress in Hull’s chase for star striker Charlie Austin.

The Tigers had a bid, thought to be a little under £4m, rejected for the striker earlier in the week and had been hopeful of agreeing a fee by the weekend.

The Tigers retain an interest but Burnley are continuing to press for the highest fee possible for a player who has only one year left on his contract at Turf Moor.
