JACK Edgar made a big impact on his first Foster’s Lancashire League derby as the 17-year-old led from the front as Lowerhouse dished out a beating on Burnley yesterday.

Opener Edgar batted quite beautifully at a boisterous Turf Moor to boost the reigning champions before another youngster Fergus Bailey claimed five wickets to send the House fans into raptures.

Many of those fans had travelled by canal barge to the game and they were soon in fine voice as their side got off to a flying start until Ben Heap was brilliantly stumped by Chris Burton off a Josh Whitehead wide.

Joe Martin joined Edgar in the middle and they shared a 105-run stand before the former went for 38 as Lowerhouse tried to step on the gas.

Their progress had been slowed somewhat by Burnley pro Adnan Rasool and skipper Bharat Tripathi - but they had little answer to Edgar, who laughed off anything that was said to him and drove like a dream to anything full.

In the end he was out for 74 to follow on from 44 on debut on Saturday and while there was a middle order wobble a typically spectacular 26 from Joey Hawke helped the House up to 198-9.

Burnley’s batting has been their strongpoint this season and they passed 200 in their first two games.

But Steve Brunt snicked an almost unplayable Francois Haasbroek ball in the first over and Qasim Ali and Tripathi soon followed as Burnley slipped to 7-3.

That became 15-4 and 23-5 - and it was turning into a demolition derby.

At 60-8 it looked like an early finish but Graham Lalor (27) and Cole Hayman (37 not out) batted well to keep the distant dream of a derby win just about alive.

But Fergus Bailey - playing in the same team as brother Declan - bowled well and claimed 5-52 as Burnley fought to a more respectable 133 all out.

Haasbroek claimed three wickets with Paddy Martin also pulling off a brilliant caught and bowled to remove Adnan Rasool.

Rishton had a derby day to remember as they piled the agony on for Church at West End.

Church collapsed from 29-2 to 40-8 before Phill Gilrane’s 14 got them up to 64 all out.

Rishton pro Dan Salpietro claimed 4-7 from 11.5 overs, while Garth Wyse (3-17) and Scott Greaves (2-21) also chipped in before Salpietro and Mo Patel steered them home for the loss of two wickets.

Graham Knowles claimed five wickets as Haslingden took the Rossendale Valley bragging rights at Rawtenstall.

Knowles’ efforts saw Rawtenstall bowled out for 147 before Mark Griffin (49 not out) and sub-pro Alan Kruger (42) did the business with the bat with the former only denied a half-century when the game was wrapped up with four wides.

Dale Gabriel filled the big shoes of the missing Jon Fielding in style as he claimed four wickets as Ramsbottom beat Bacup after bowling them out for 110 with wicketkeeper Tom Parton trousering five victims.

Rob Faulkener then hit an unbeaten 50 as Rammy coasted home.

Nelson recovered well to beat Colne in the Pendle derby at The Horsfield.

They were in a spot of bother at 42-5 but Neil Thompson hit 42, Russell Bradley made 43 not out and Sean Lemon’s return to the first team saw him hit 58 not out as Nelson got up to 202-6 at the close.

Colne were going well for a time - but in the end Nelson closed out the win with ease.

Graham Lloyd made an unbeaten 63 as Accrington racked up 217-9 at Enfield - and that was just enough for them to see off their Hyndburn rivals who were 201-9 at the close, while East Lancashire came out on top in the only non derby game of the day at Alexandra Meadows.

They won by 41 runs after posting 167 all out with Tod pro Geeth Alwis claiming 4-47. East Lancs shared the wickets round with the visitors finally all out for 126.
