BLACKBURN Rovers are set to run the rule over Belgium Under-21 international striker Stijn De Smet.

De Smet, who plays for Rovers' feeder club Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Jupiler League, has been singled out as a player of some promise.

The 21-year-old will spend four days with the Ewood outfit later in the year after impressing for Brugge.

He's the club's joint top scorer with two so far this season but missed Cercle's game with Beveren on Saturday after picking up an injury in the warm-up.

The trial is part of a reciprocal agreement between the clubs, now in its third season, which has seen players move both ways.

Sergio Peter, Keith Barker - who is on loan at Rochdale - and Luke Jones, who has since left Rovers, are Blackburn players who have benefited from a loan move to Belgium.

And now De Smet and youth scholar Dwight Willie will spend time in East Lancashire.

Rovers chairman John Williams said: "We were told about Stijn through the agreement we have with Cercle.

"We passed it on to the scouting network and now we've decided to get him over and have a look at him.

"It's very much a learning process with Cercle Brugge.

"They've been over a couple of times to stay with our coaches and we've played games against them at the academy in pre-season.

"The relationship is very much in its infancy and it's something for the long-term rather than the short-term.

"It's going very well so far and it's to the advantage of both clubs."
