WHAT a wet week, but it's been fine for me.

I was so pleased the Queen got such a warm welcome on her visit to Blackburn but sadly I didn't get to meet her.

I'm quite sure that she would have mentioned this omission!

Blackburn is getting itself in the news and that's great.

And there's more good cheer with the news that Rovers are going to sell Thwaites beers.

If the council follows and does the same in its premises then all will be well.

Seriously, the town really should support local manufacturers.

If it is at all possible, orders for council goods should be placed in the area.

It makes sense as these companies are both employers and ratepayers, so let's watch this space.

I have a good feeling that the town is at a turning point and things are definitely starting to improve.

Yes, I'm definitely optimistic. Perhaps it's all the lovely areas of flowers which are so uplifting and cheering.

So it's thanks very much' to the Parks Department.

I suppose they are like us all, battling with the weeds during this wettest of all droughts'.

Mine have been growing inches in minutes, getting bigger while I watch.

So I have had to call in the heavy artillery, namely Donald Banks.

He's a comic in the evening and friend in the day and let's face it, not even a doting mother could call him light'.

He's amusing, funny, hilarious even but definitely not light.

We've hoed, sprayed, dug, tugged and cursed but in the end I left them to it and retired to the TV with back and nails broken.

But they seem to be winning the battle against the weeds.

Last Monday I was at the Grant A Wish committee meeting at Burlington's in Broughton. You can't beat having meetings in a good restaurant and the fact that I am a shareholder and get a discount has nothing to do with it (and it wasn't a freebie, as we pay for ourselves).

On Tuesday it was more food at Shaw Hill Golf Club for a Cancer Research lunch, where, accompanied by Dave Smith, young James Loynes thrilled us all with his singing and the aforementioned Mr Banks made us laugh.

We enjoyed excellent food and company on Wednesday evening at Nelson and Colne College for the Colne Inner Wheel 25th charter dinner.

The Avenue at Brockhall was the venue for Thursday lunch and a fashion show by Maureen Cookson.

Finally it was the Ladies' Fellowship meeting at Cambridge Street Methodists in Accrington.

I was a little apprehensive as their previous speaker was a lady vicar.

I needn't have worried as we got on like a house on fire.

Finally, there's all this talk about who gets what when a marriage breaks up.

It makes me fear for the future of that most vital of institutions.

And there was silly me thinking it was all about love!

Till next week.
