THE Eid festival is to be held early next week and already we have the chorus of voices wary about the number of young people driving their cars at speed.

Barring the obvious dangers of driving at high speeds, the whole experience for everyone else is, in all honesty, a pain.

For those who are generally past the ‘I’m going to drive around in a circle for several hours’ phase, it can be the most frustrating thing on the planet.

I can’t see the point of driving around in brand new clothes.

I say this as a middle-aged man who is generally bored of most things anyway.

Some are intent on causing a huge nuisance to everyone else. The whole point of Ramadan and Eid is lost and some folk will use it as an excuse to just be a general pain.

Some years ago I ended up on the famous Curry Mile and was surprised at the number of people sat in a brand-spanking new cars honking the horns.

The horn is the key to everything, I have learnt – if you don’t honk your horn, it means you are not enjoying yourself.

Back in Blackburn I do not want to get stuck on any road or main road because some guy wants to ‘cruise’ at 10mph.

This forces many of us to avoid the main routes around town.

I may well be simply clogging up the town with pointless visits to people’s homes to see how well they cooked the chicken legs and the almost customary knock on the door of people I avoided for the rest of the year, but we worked hard for that day off.

I’m all for young people having fun - actually I am not really. I don’t want young people to have fun if it impacts my leisurely drive.

This Eid I suggest all parents force anyone under the age of 21 with a licence to wear shalwar kameez and walk.

Weather seems fine enough.
