I AM excited and really looking forward to the Queen’s visit on Thursday.

I have always been a royalist; my father joined up, fought and was wounded four times in the First World War and always stood to attention whenever the National Anthem was played — wherever he was, even in the house.

I think, no, think is not the right word; I do believe the royal family are a very strong, unifying influence.

They are not changed by elections or variations in public opinion, but are always there for us — a constant — which is something that is very much admired by a lot of countries which don’t have a similar regime, or our stability.

Just imagine if you had to change your allegiance to your head of state every time there was an election!

No, to me, there is no doubt we have the very best of systems.

I clearly remember the Queen’s last visit, waiting and watching as she went along the line of important local people who were being introduced to her.

She was shaking their hands, smiling and having a short word with them.

I remarked to the gentleman standing next to me: “Good heavens! What on earth does she find to say to them all?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” he replied. “Whoever is introducing her to them says something like ‘May I introduce the Mayor of Blackburn Ma’am’.

“She then probably says ‘the Mayor of Blackburn?’ and he replies ‘Yes Ma’am, the Mayor of Blackburn’ — and so on down the line.”

I now have to put my mind to the serious question of what to wear, not that anyone will notice, as all eyes will be on the Queen, but it is important that you feel good.

It’s going to be a great day for Blackburn. I am so looking forward to it, I just can’t wait.

Now, where on earth is that hat!
