SO, in that part of our ‘stable’ diet that is the ubiquitous beefburger, it now seems that we have been saddled with horse meat.

Personally, I fail to see the problem.

We eat the flesh of so many animals, why is the horse deemed so different?

Of course, though, the problem wasn’t about the safety of horse meat but about the fact that we were being misled and lied to.

That’s the serious bit, because it’s vital that we’re confident in and can absolutely rely on the honesty of food manufacturers.

For there are people with all sorts of allergies and reactions and it’s for their safety and peace of mind that we need to be absolutely certain that what the food industry says on their packaging about their products is the absolute truth.

We take for granted lots of the food we eat today, food that has originated from all over the world.

When I was a kid, rice was for puddings, it definitely was not a vegetable, and as to ‘let’s have a curry’, we’d never heard of it, let alone a kebab.

Actually my mum thought that must be some sort of a foreign dress!

Today we take all these foods for granted and really enjoy all the different tastes.

I must admit wondering whether the people who have come to live here think our national foods a little bit bland, to say the least, but I am led to believe that fish and chips are a big favourite with them.

That’s not surprising, really, as they are a favourite all over the world — I think they must be one of our more successful exports.

  • Thursday is Valentine’s Day. Oh, what evocative memories, remembering the excitement of would ‘he’ send one or should I send one? And if I do will he know who it’s from?

All those oh so agonising problems!

I was looking at some old cards in my big mementoes chest and I’m very sad to say I can’t even recall who ‘I will be yours forever and ever, Brian’ was!
