A ROSSENDALE care home has been told to improve its record-keeping after an inspection found it was failing to meet some standards.

The monitoring of services at Ash Cottage Residential Home, in Edenfield, also fell short of industry guidelines, according to a report by the Care Quality Commission.

The home was issued with two compliance actions, although the watchdog also praised Ash Cottage’s ‘kind, pleasant and friendly’ staff and highlighted its ‘good links with health care professionals’.

Ann Zieme, the home’s manager, has already pledged to tackle administrative problems, which were spotted during a visit by a CQC inspector in May.

An inspection report, published last week, pointed out that some policies had not been reviewed since 2009 and that one resident’s records had not been updated since last August.

One criticism read: “We spoke with the local authority, who told us, following a recent visit, they had concerns about the standard of record keeping.

“On the day of our inspection visit we were told a number of people's care records were unavailable as they were being reviewed.”

The report added: “Following our inspection visit we discussed our concerns with the registered manager as we were concerned people could be at risk of receiving inappropriate care as records about the care and support they needed were not up to date or fit for purpose.”

Mrs Zieme was unavailable for comment yesterday, while the home’s assistant manager also declined to talk to the Lancashire Telegraph.

However, the report concluded: “We were told the care records were currently being updated and would be reviewed on a regular basis.

“This should ensure they accurately reflected people's needs and the care and support being given.”

Ash Cottage is registered with the CQC to provide personal care and accommodation, without nursing, for up to 20 people.
