A TRES bonne time was had by pupils celebrating European Day of Languages at Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads.

Associate Headteacher and Head of Modern Foreign Languages Alexis Ribot organised a host of different activities.

These included an inter-form quiz about Europe, Spanish and French food tasting and the showing of Disney’s Cars film in French with English subtitles.

Pains au chocolat were served at break in the kiosk and pupils could have different country’s flags painted on their faces.

Year 11 pupils Rhiannon Clarkson, Emily Newbigging and Leah Thorpe joined their friend Zuzanna Czetowicz in having the Polish flag painted on their cheek to celebrate Zuzi’s homeland.

Zuzi. 15, said: “I came to England two years ago and could not speak any English. I have been at Fearns since I moved here and I have made good friends. At school I have made the most progress.”

Mr Ribot said: “The European Day of Languages is always celebrated on September 26 and at my former school in Droylsden I used to organise events.

“The pupils have responded very well to the idea and it is part of raising the profile of the language department and the importance of learning a language.

“By having the flags painted on their faces, it has reinforced a sense of community and being together.”

All money raised was donated to the school’s efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support. On Friday October 6 an all day Macmillan community coffee event will be held at Fearns.
