Back in 1897 hundreds of East Lancastrians lined the streets to celebrate one of several historical royal occasions.

When Queen Victoria celebrated her diamond jubilee - 121 years ago - Barnoldswick was no more than a few streets which had a slim variety of shops.

Just like the sweets shop in this picture, those in the village took the occasion as a chance to celebrate British values and nationality and fly the Union flag.

As dancers paraded through the streets, men watched from a roof ledge, smoking rather large pipes .

Queen Victoria was the first British monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee and respects were paid right across the British empire, covering more than 450million people.

The day was declared a bank holiday in Britain and India as well as Ireland.

With another royal celebration taking place tomorrow and celebrations set to take place across the country, it seems the royals still have an important place in the nation's heart.
