The end of summer marks the start of spider season in the UK, which will run through September and October.

With the weather starting to cool and get a bit rainier, spiders will start to move indoors into homes, garages, and sheds.

For those who are afraid of spiders, this can be a difficult time and you might be looking for ways to keep them out of your house.

A cleaning expert has shared exactly what you should do to keep spiders out of your home this autumn.

How to keep spiders out of your home

Chantel Mila, a home styling, organising, and cleaning expert, regularly shares tips on how to keep your home clean on her Instagram and TikTok page.

In her video, she said: “Here are some more tricks to keep bugs and spiders away from your home.”

Chantel suggested adding sliced lemons, sprigs of rosemary, and clove to a pan of boiling water to help keep spiders away.

She said: “Spiders hate these smells so allow this fragrance to fill your home and you can bottle this mix and use it as a surface spray.”

You can easily spray the mix around your doors and windows by using a spray bottle to deter spiders from coming inside.

Chantel also had another trick that is easy to do around the house to stop spiders from making webs in your home.

She suggested wiping peppermint oil on your ceilings to stop spiders from crawling up there.

Why do spiders hate strong smells?

Spiders do not have noses and instead use hairs and organs found on their legs to detect smells.

These organs are extremely sensitive to changes in the environment, including volatile organic compounds that are released by certain substances.

Things like essential oils and household products that smell like peppermint and citrus can act as a powerful spider repellent that will overwhelm the spider’s sensory system and stop them from entering the area.

Stronger scents and higher concentrations of the scent are more effective when trying to stop spiders from entering your home.
