However, there are plenty of household essentials that can help you out when it comes to cleaning the drains and getting rid of bad smells.

7 ways you can clean your drains without breaking the bank

Boiling water

If your drains are draining slowly, pouring boiling water down them can help improve drainage speed, the experts at Posh.co.uk explain.

It also means you don’t have any additional costs like buying cleaning products.

White vinegar

Everyday use can clog our bathroom drains with hair, toothpaste and soap all contributing to a blockage.

White vinegar helps with blockages and can remove bad odours.

Baking soda

You can sprinkle baking soda onto drains to help unblock them.

Leave it on drains for roughly 20 minutes and then scrub the area with an abrasive sponge. Then, pour boiling hot water over the area.

Effervescent indigestion tablets

In less than 15 minutes, these tablets can help to unblock your drains.

You’ll need to mix the tablets and some white wine vinegar and pour it down the drain.

Let it sit for around 10 minutes before pouring some boiling water to get rid of the debris and solution.

Salt

You can also try using salt to resolve blockages in drains. Simply mix a few spoonfuls of salt with hot water and leave it for five minutes before flushing it down with hot water.

Vodka

It seems vodka isn't just for drinking...

It won’t necessarily clear blockages in your drains but it does help remove any lingering odours by neutralising the smell, the experts say.

Lemon juice

Pour a cup of lemon juice down the drain and let it sit for about an hour and then flush it out with boiling water.
