The next season of Love Island is upon us and it can only mean one thing – summer has arrived.

After revealing the first 10 islanders who will be entering the villa tonight (June 5), we have also been given a sneak peek into the home where the contestants will be spending the next eight weeks.

Last week, fans were also asked to vote for who they wanted to be coupled up during the first episode which will be revealed this evening.

The Love Island Twitter account has posted a teaser from tonight’s show, where viewers can see host Maya Jama arrive in a white crochet dress to deliver the first “shock” of the series to the islanders.

Every year we see the group of singletons enjoying a golden glass of ‘fizz’ most nights, but can they really drink alcohol on the reality series?

As we gear up to see the likes of Molly Marsh, George Fensom and Ella Thomas on their journey to find love, this is what we know about the drinking and smoking rules on Love Island.

What time does Love Island start?

The first episode of this year’s summer Love Island airs on ITV2 and ITVX from 9pm tonight.

Can Love Island contestants drink alcohol in the villa?

The Love Island contestants can drink on the show, however, they are limited to two glasses per day and the type of alcoholic beverage has to be considered carefully.

Amy Hart, who featured in 2019's series, told The Sun: “So it's definitely one drink in the night and you have to order it in the afternoon. You can have like white wine, red wine, beer.

“I think for every one glass of wine you can get two beers because they are little cans. That was it. There was no spirits or anything. You could have a glass of prosecco actually. But it's like Spanish prosecco.

“It's one drink and if it's a particularly long night you get a second drink.”

According to The Metro, a spokesperson for the ITV show in 2016, said: “We provide our islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored by our production team.”

Can Love Island contestants smoke in the villa?

In previous years, viewers of Love Island were able to see the islanders smoke more frequently on camera, however, ITV has since changed the rules.

From the 2019 series onwards, islanders are still allowed to smoke but they must be away from the villa as well as the cameras in a "designated smoking area", reports The Metro.

The stars looking for love aren't allowed to smoke in groups, which was implemented to discourage social smoking.

It’s thought that this is also to make sure conversations between contestants can still be shown on TV.

ITV confirmed to The Metro that the same rules have been applied to vaping.
