We have no shortage of politicians (LT Letters) – what we are lacking is statesmen.

Governing is exceedingly difficult and all the moreso when you consider the appalling low standards of political journalism discourse in some parts of the mainstream media.

You see, we’ve had three to four decades of the political class fashioning people into consumers rather than citizens.

And the dreadful results of this are now plain for all to see.

Ironically, the rise of consumerism has played a large part in the withering and emasculation of political parties. All of the mainstream parties are now struggling and being consumed by the monster that they helped to create. In some ways, it’s poetic justice.
