THE report from a survey on attitudes to politicians that 23 per cent of respondents have trust in government ministers telling the truth is deeply worrying.

I simply cannot comprehend how the figure can be so high unless these people are related directly to ministers in the current administration.

Trust is a wonderful, precious and delicate thing which is central to a healthy and functioning democracy.

It takes years to build but can be destroyed in an instant. Politicians have not looked after it at all well and must now face the consequences of their recklessness.

I am deeply saddened to admit that I long ago lost faith and trust in politicians. I treat all official' figures (from central and local government, police, fire service, NHS, schools, colleges etc) as suspect, and all statements from public sector managers and the political class as complete fabrication.

It is ironic that public service targets intended to revitalise the standing of the body politic have been so badly abused by managers and politicians that they have contributed in no small measure to their downfall. One looks to the future, but not without great foreboding.

Perhaps New Labour' will have the answer. I expect them shortly to announce a target for restoring trust and within weeks figures' will be published to prove' that trust has never been higher.
