IN response to the recent article about councillor Tony Melia and the closing of Darwen police station’s front desk, not everyone has access to “electrical communications.”

As regards the “phone”, I quote an experience I had the last time I had cause to use it: I used the number in the local directory, waited at least two minutes and was put through to Preston.

I was reporting an incident on the Blacksnape playing fields at Darwen.

When giving details, I was asked “Where is that?”

Some twenty minutes or so later, two police cars arrived. However, the culprits causing damage to the shelter roof had gone.

At a recent meeting at Darwen Town Hall, the question of the police station closing was raised.

The meeting was told that the station was not to close and officers could be available at Darwen, but the front desk would close. Does “could be available” mean an officer from out of town?

The front desk for some is the only direct access to police in an emergency and should not be closed.

Should the For Darwen group not ask the residents of Darwen what they want?

After all, Darwen has had its own police station for some time and a lot of residents, regardless of age, do not have “electrical communications”.

H Clarke, Darwen.
