ON behalf of members of the Blackburn branch of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regimental Association, I wish to mention a special service held in Blackburn Cathedral on Sunday – the 95th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

While the congregation was being seated, the band of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment played.

A special welcome was tended to a group of young people from the Free State, South Africa, whose Bishop Patrick gave the address, and what a stirring address it was, based on the difference between the love of power and the power of love.

The branch had also presented a new Book of Remembrance which was dedicated during the service and, sad to say, already contains 16 names. Families of some of those 16 were in the cathedral to witness the dedication.

Following the service a luncheon was held in the Crypt, where the branch chairman and membership secretary were presented with the Regimental Medal.

A raffle raised £208.

Thanks to everyone concerned. Joan Mather (via email).
