When I read of the intended shake-up to the postal voting system, my first thought was that, at last, common sense had prevailed. Alas, after reading further, my disapp-ointment knew no bounds.

The current system which allows entire households to register as one to vote and opens the door for people to be added without their knowledge or, worse still, false names to be used, is to end. Instead, each family member will have to register individually. But I doubt if this will stop them being told who they should vote for.

Casting a vote in the secrecy of a polling station booth is the only way to ensure that the voter has absolute freedom of choice.

So my suggestion is that the government stops tinkering with a system which, since New Labour first introduced it, has led to levels of electoral fraud never before seen in this country, and reverts to postal votes only being given to those who genuinely cannot go to the polling station.
