There have been several comments from readers about the ‘excessive’ number of councillors in Blackburn with Darwen.

Mr Woodacre of Kentmere Dr, Blackburn (LT, February 18) says there are currently 60 councillors.

There are actually 64.

However, the number of councillors per authority is NOT decided by the council.

It is decided by the independent boundary commission when boundaries to local authorities are periodically reviewed.

The council has little say in the matter. If every councillor in BwD was abolished then the savings would only amount to about 1.2 per cent of the total savings needed.

If people are interested in how the council is proposing to save the £28 million required in 2011/12, the papers for the budget setting meeting on March 7th will soon be available.

If anyone wants a copy of these papers then just contact your local councillor.
