JACK Straw glibly writes of English votes for English people as an idea that has "got going in some quarters" (LT, July 20).

Some quarters! Wake up and smell the English roses Jack: opinion polls are showing large and increasing numbers of English people who don't just want English votes. They want an English parliament.

As for the status quo's latest transparent tactic of saying the English will be to blame if the UK breaks up, I would say this, Jack, get off your soapbox and read the papers more. It was an unholy cabal of Scottish, Welsh and Irish MPs that allowed the majority that devolved power away from Westminster.

We English want equality, so either scrap devolution or give us our own parliament.
