WE are delighted that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has decided to allow doctors to prescribe Alzheimer’s drugs to people with mild symptoms of the disease.
There is no know cure for Alzheimer’s but these drugs can alleviated symptoms in many cases at low cost (approximately £2.80 per day).
This will have a massive positive impact not only on those suffering from the disease but also their carers.
Up to now, only those with moderate or more sever symptoms have been allowed to get the drugs, leading to a situation where people have been forced to wait until their condition deteriorated irreversibly before they could be prescribed.
The decision is a victory for common sense, but what a shame it has taken four years to get there.
PAULINE WALSH, chief officer, Age Concern.
