A SEDGWICK (LET, May 12) asks what business the Bishop of Blackburn has in calling upon voters to refrain from voting for the BNP and tells him to stick to teaching the Ten Commandments instead.

May I refer A Sedgwick to St Matthew's Gospel (19:16-20). Jesus tells a man that, in order to gain eternal life, he must keep the Commandments.

When asked: "Which Commandments?" Jesus replies: "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false evidence, honour your father and mother, and love your neighbour as yourself."

"Love thy neighbour" is a fundamental part of Christian teaching.

The Bishop would therefore be failing in his vocation were he to turn a blind eye to the doctrine of hatred espoused by the BNP.

Even a devout Atheist like myself knows that.
