PEOPLE say that school exams are getting easier today. In the early 60s, I passed GCSEs in English Language and English Literature and won the school literature prize.

My 17-year-old granddaughter, Kirsty Burton, has recently started at St Mary’s College and is studying A-levels in language and literature.

I can’t begin to tackle her homework! Youngsters today are far more clever than we were!
