IN response to your article relating to the planned shift changes for the Lancashire Constabulary, Andy Rhodes says that they need to get more officers on the front line without spending any more money and that officers will still be working their contracted hours.

As I see it, his answer is to make more officers work an eight-hour shift for seven days in a row, followed by three rest days, then another seven days of eight hours.

This means that every two weeks officers lose a rest day and no additional pay to cover this.

In another 12 months, officers will lose at least 24 days’ leave.

You actually spell out the hours (56 hour, 48 hour, 40 hour), weeks would be interspersed with 24 and 32 hour weeks.

What do they actually mean? Whoever has had the task of creating all this should have at least made it easy to understand, as on top of this there is no mention of shift changeover times.

Morale will be very low if this is the case, and I can only see sickness, stress and breakdowns looming.
