So, David Butterworth believes road bumps are pointless (LT, September 17).

Well, I have a Down’s Syndrome son and I walk the area, unlike some in the their speedy cars.

OK, no-one has actually been killed in our area, yet.

Would Mr Butterworth like to accompany the police when they tell the parents of a child who has been slaughtered by a boy racer, or someone with a phone in his/her car?

On a more realistic level, a traffic management system does not just sort out the major routes.

If major routes are blocked then drivers use alternative routes.

So, unless one is totally naive, one might understand that stopping children and others being killed by people in command of killing machines, has to be a complete plan.

And, yes, I do have a driving licence and yes, I do try to drive to a safe standard.

When I first started learning to drive in 1966, we used all our gears and drove to a reasonable speed.

When I passed my test some years ago, I was being encouraged, in order to pass the test, to drive to the maximum speed. Who is to blame for that?

Well, who administers the testing process? Is it still part of the Government? An agency?

J S KENT (Mr), Clitheroe.
