We’ve all seen some questionable scenes when venturing out into East Lancashire’s nightlife, but nothing comes close to the moral outrage that ensued after what I witnessed on a quiet Wednesday night out.

Enjoying a couple of drinks with work colleagues, we decided to continue on to a nightclub.

But the sight I was greeted with was enough to turn my enjoyable night on its head.

Wednesdays have a battle of the sexes theme, in which men and women demonstrate their stupidity and drunken state in a set of mindless drinking games.

The aim of the game was to ‘down’ a bottle of alcopop on stage and be the first group to have all four contestants finish their bottles.

Last week I was disgusted to find a heavily pregnant girl not only engaging in irresponsible drinking, but being allowed to partake in a drinking game on stage.

Call me old-fashioned, but I find it irresponsible, not to mention an outrage, having to stand by and watch a young woman threatening the health of her unborn child.

By all means, there is no law against serving pregnant women intoxicating liquors, but surely it brings into question the concept of responsible licensing when a heavily pregnant and intoxicated young lady is allowed to prance around on stage.

These games have been called into question in the past for glorifying binge drinking, but encouraging this behaviour in a pregnant young lady brings things to a new low.

I don’t wish to judge the young lady in question.

I do, however, question the integrity and ethics of the nightclub staff. Who in their right mind thought it was acceptable to allow her to flaunt her negligent behaviour in front of the club’s patrons?
