I read the front-page story (LT, March 30) concerning waste disposal sites with some amazement, because as Portfolio holder for Enviromental Services in Rossendale and a member of the Lancashire Waste Management Committee, I thought someone may have done the courtesy of advising me of the proposal.
My amazement turned to anger when I discovered that nobody in Rossendale Borough Council had been advised or consulted, yet the whole process was revealed to a newspaper reporter. How New Labour!
My anger reached boiling point by the afternoon when a senior officer at the County Council excused the abscence of consultation by saying, “We used to do that in the old days, but now we check what is available sort out what is suitable and then tell the various authorities what we intend to do.”
I can’t work out if the County Councillors are so arrogant that they think they can get away with this attitude, or are they so weak that the officers can do what they want?
Coun Peter Steen.
