PROPOSALS for more than 80 homes near a speeding hot-spot could lead to a ‘terrible accident’ if they go ahead, a councillor has said.

Plans have been received by Hyndburn Council for 84 properties to be built off Mount St James and Stanhill Road in Knuzden.

Cllr Glen Harrison, who represents the St Oswalds ward, said he is increasingly concerned with speeding between Oswaldtwistle and Knuzden and has said the plans could make it worse.

He said: “More residents means more drivers, more traffic, more speeding and ultimately more terrible accidents.

“I have been contacted by five residents of Stanhill in two days, all reporting dangerous driving in this area.

“I fear if this does not stop soon, it is only a matter of time before someone is killed, more worryingly a child who could be playing harmlessly in the street.”

The plans for the land include nine bungalows, 32 semi-detached houses, seven detached properties, six farm buildings conversion and 30 town houses.

The application was submitted by Clive Rawlinson for the site which is used as farmland.

An applicant spokesman, in statement submitted by planning agent Hartley Planning and Development Associates, said: “At the heart of the framework is a presumption in favour of sustainable development, which should be seen as a golden thread running through both plan making and decision taking.”

Cllr Harrison said speeding has been an issue in the area for ‘around 10 years'.

He said he has noted several incidents over the past months of cars crashing into a wall, bus stops and other vehicles.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “Councillors have raised concerns about vehicle speeds on Stanhill Road, and we will carry out a traffic survey to investigate the issue and inform any further action."
