A NEW bus stop has been put up in memory of a former Hyndburn Council worker.

Marjorie Fielding, who passed away last month, aged 72, was keen to see a new shelter erected on her regular route from outside the Christian Science Church in Burnley Road, Accrington to Burnley.

The former shelter was destroyed by the wind, leaving bus travellers standing in the rain and cold.

Mrs Fielding, of Birkett Road, had asked Huncoat councillor Dave Parkins to look into having the stop replaced.

But she died the week before the new structure was erected.

Cllr Parkins said: “I have been fighting for 12 months because Marjorie came to me to see if there was any chance of getting another bus shelter there.

“I went and saw Dave Turner, an architect at the council who was very helpful and has got one put up for us.

“Unfortunately, Marjorie passed away the week before she could use it.”

Cllr Parkins said he thought Mrs Fielding, who worked as a secretary to the borough treasurer, would be delighted with the shelter, which has solar panels which power its night-time lighting.

Mrs Fielding worked at the council for most of her life and Cllr Parkins added: “I wanted to put the shelter up in Marjorie’s memory.

“She helped me raise the issue and kept on at me to get it sorted.

“The bus shelter before was dilapidated because the wind got hold of it.

“It was unsafe and Lancashire County Council took it down.

“Marjorie was a lovely woman and I think she would have been really pleased.

“Her husband Roland is as pleased as punch too about this.

“I am just glad I have been able to do something for Marjorie.

“But it is a shame she will not be able to see it. I am sure she is looking down on it.”

Cllr Bernard Dawson, who also represents Huncoat, said he was sure the bus stop would be appreciated by the whole community.

He said: “It is a bus stop that was needed up there.

“But it is sad that Marjorie, who had done most of the campaigning for it, passed away before she got to see it.”
