A FAMOUS television advertisement has been re-imagined to reflect the growing success of the football club that wouldn’t die.

The 1989 original featured a young football fan being teased for drinking milk by his friend.

He says Liverpool and Wales star Ian Rush, then one of the world’s most celebrated strikers and keen consumer of the drink, had told him: “If I don’t drink lots of milk when I grow up I’ll only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley.”

The lemonade-drinking friend asked: “Accrington Stanley? Who are they?”

Referring to the club’s then non-league obscurity, the original child replies: “Exactly.”

In the new version Ian Rush, only referred to in the original ad for the Milk Marketing Board, winds up the film by telling the two young fans: “Actually lads this makes no sense, Accrington Stanley are in League One now.”

The milk-drinking child says: “So they’re quite good then.”

A smiling ‘Rushie’, Liverpool's all-time leading scorer, replies: “Exactly.”

The short film, airing on social media, was made by Studio.co.uk who sponsor the new £1.2million family stand at the club’s Wham Stadium.

Studio, a trading name for one of Accrington’s biggest employers, Express Gifts , came up with the idea to celebrate both their sponsorship and Stanley’s promotion to League One as champions of League Two.

Club chairman Andy Holt is delighted with the resurrection of the advert mirroring the revival of the club which went out of existence in 1962, was reborn in 1968 and promoted back into the Football League in 2006.

He said: “We think it's a great idea. It’s a bit of fun and reflects the success of the club which is at highest position since its re-founding.

“We have a sense of humour which we bring to our football. This is about promoting ‘Amazing Accrington’ including the club, and Studio. We hope it gets more people to support the team, buy their presents through Express Gifts and visit the town."
