FUNDING for The Barlow Institute in Edgworth will continue for another year, Blackburn with Darwen Council has announced.

The decision means no staff will be lost before April 2012, and a flurry of fresh ideas for the centre has been sparked.

The institute, in Bolton Road, was set to lose its £42,000 a year funding due to spending cuts – despite a pledge to reverse that decision.

Now a four-year transit-ion period will start in 2012, where funding will be withdrawn gradually.

Heather Dowle, chairman of the institute committee, said: “We would like to have a computer at the institute where people can order books and have them delivered to the institute or to their homes.”

Mrs Dowle and Alyson Whitlock, a committee member, will become licensees so that the institute is more attractive for people to hire for weddings and music events.

Volunteers are also wanted to help paint the main hall.

People interested in helping should call Mrs Dowle on 01204 852522.
