FIREFIGHTERS came under attack last night as they tried to put out a rubbish fire in Nelson last night.

The fire brigade was called out to a house in Raglan Street at 11:30pm, but as they worked to put out the blaze, a man started throwing plates, glasses and pots at them.

The firefighters had to wait until the police arrived and arrested the 19-year-old man, whose back yard the fire had started in, before they could continue to put out the fire and make sure it did not spread to the house.

Watch manager Tom Simpson said: “We did go through a spate when this would happen quite often.

“The guy had obviously had a drink.

“When this happens we just withdraw - we try and keep ourselves out of danger.”
