CONTROVERSIAL plans to replace a rundown former care home in Waterfoot have been recommended for approval.

Demolition is proposed for the now-shut Mytholme House in Burnley Road East, with Green Vale Homes hoping to building 14 bedsits, in a two-storey block, and 12 flats over three storeys nearby.

Plans lodged with Rossendale Council also show a 12-space car park, reached from the existing bus turning circle.

But residents, backed by Whitewell councillor Jim Pilling, have voiced their opposition to the package, insisting it will harm the listed Victoria Parade and involve the unnecessary loss of trees and open space in the heart of Waterfoot.

Rossendale Civic Trust has also expressed concerns, focusing on the ‘cheap’ facing materials proposed and concerns over the size of the units.

Lancashire Police have confirmed the building has been a magnet for burglars and vandals over the past year.

Members of the borough’s development control committee will make a final decision on the application when they meet tonight.
