A WOMAN caught shoplifting had tried to bite the security tags off four bottles of spirits, a court heard.
Kirsty Holt, 24, of Holme Terrace, Nelson, had wanted to steal drink to sell to get cash for food because her benefits had been suspended and she was hungry.
She had paid for some goods in Morrisons, but put the alcohol in a bag, Burnley magistrates were told.
Holt, who has not been in trouble since December 2009, admitted theft of alcohol worth £63.16, on April 4.
The defendant was given a six month community order.
The hearing was told the alcohol was recovered, but three bottles were damaged as they were open and the seals broken. Holt made admissions when interviewed.
Philip Turner, for Holt, said she had had drug and relationship problems.
The solicitor said: “She has faced and attempted to tackle these difficulties. She has been to Inspire and is on a methadone prescription. The defendant has mental health issues, is receiving counselling weekly and is on medication every day.”
