DODGY used cars are top of the list of complaints to trading standards, with 700 calls every year.
The county council said half relate to potential criminal offences such as vehicle clocking, unroadworthy vehicles and sales with misleading claims.
County Coun Albert Atkinson, deputy leader of the county council, wants people to be more aware of the pitfalls and their rights.
He said: “We continue to receive a high number of complaints which are often due to traders refusing to deal with legitimate complaints or provide appropriate compensation.
“Our Trading Standards service provides guidance to the 900-plus car dealers operating within the county and we take action against those who flout the law.”
Buyers are encouraged to go to an established dealer or firm with a good reputation by asking friends for a recommendation.
Private sales don’t have the same legal protection.

Top tips for spotting faults are to check a car in daylight and dry weather, look for welding or engine repairs, check mileage, signs of forced entry, paperwork, and get a mechanic to examine it and take it on a test drive.
