AROUND 70 jobs will be axed after a major review of the careers service run by Lancashire County Council.

Nearly 200 posts have been shed in 2011, after officials overhauled Lancashire’s youth centre provision this year, as part of a £5.3million cuts package.

But now with the government saying careers advice should be delivered by high schools and colleges, further savings of £3million are being made.

Part of the programme will see ‘infocentres’ in Nelson and Chorley close.

Burnley’s office in Hall Street has been given a stay of execution but will be reviewed again in 12 months.

And offices in the Pendle Rise centre in Nelson will also be scrapped.

Remaining staff in Nelson will move to the new Bradley Youth Hub and Chorley workers are set to switch to the young people’s centre in Union Street.

Coun Mark Perks, cabinet member for young people, said: “The changes will, where possible, focus on administrative and ‘back office’ costs.

“There will be difficult decisions to consider but under challenging circumstances we will do everything we can to get the best outcome for young people in Lancashire.”

Staff consultations have been ongoing and the plans are set to be signed off by Coun Perks and Coun Susie Charles, the schools cabinet member.

Council papers show around 280 members of staff have so far requested information about taking voluntary redundancy.

Once a decision has been taken on who will leave, the redundancies will take effect on March 31 next year.
