DRINKING buddies from Roe Lee are tackling their fourth endurance challenge in a bid to raise money for a charity for wounded soldiers this weekend.

Construction student Jason Walker, 29, from Pemberton Street, and engineer Neil McVey, 43, from Haydock Street, have already collected nearly £3,000 for Help for Heroes.

After climbing Britain's three highest peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, they have their sights set on the 127 mile cycle ride along the Leeds-Liverpool canal.

Today they will be joined by Patrick Ward, 37, landlord of the Stanley Arms, in Pemberton Street, and builder Gary Walker, 40, from Campbell Court.

A family fun day at the pub, featuring a barbecue, bouncy castle and raffle, will follow on tomorrow.

Blackburn College pupil Jason said: "We'll be going through the pain barrier to complete the distance in a day. The poor weather could dampen our spirits but we will just stop for a pint and carry on regardless."

The lads were due to set off from the River Lock, Leeds at 6am and expect to reach Canning Dock, Liverpool between 10pm and midnight.

Mr McVey said they had decided to get involved as they have friends in the forces.

He said: "We know people who are fighting in Afghanistan at the moment and doing these events is our way of trying to help them.

“The charity does such good work and the cash will go towards supporting soldiers if anything happens to them."

Help for Heroes manager Gina Jones expressed her thanks for the pair's continuing fundraising efforts. In total they hope to raise £5,000.

She said: "Everyone here is extremely grateful for their work and wish them all the best for the tough bike ride."
