POLICE called to a disturbance in the Blackburn College area were confronted by more than 250 youths.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Asian Najeeb became abusive towards one officer telling him “the brothers have sorted it”.

The officer said he was extremely concerned for his own safety and that of his fellow officers as the crowd involved in a “volatile” situation was swelled.

Catherine Allan, prose-cuting, said as the officer attempted to arrest Najeeb he was surrounded by an angry mob.

“The officer was concerned for his safety and that of his fellow officers,” said Miss Allan.

“The demeanour of the males involved was aggressive and violent but the officer was unable to ascertain what had happened before the police arrived.”

Najeeb was threatening and abusive and struggled with the officer when he was arrested.

Basharat Ditta, defending, said Najeeb had been drawn into the incident on the afternoon of September 10 because his brother was there and had called him.

“It seems his brother had been involved in an incident which resulted in injuries,” said Mr Ditta.

“He fully accepts the police were carrying out their duty but he took exception when they came directly towards him when there were others carrying out violence.”

Mr Ditta said he understood there were only two arrests, Najeeb and his brother.

Najeeb, 19, of Bastwell Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour. He was fined £100 with £75 costs.
