MINHAZ Khelya, 17, has been elected as Blackburn with Darwen's new youth Member of Parliament after a record election turnout.
The Blackburn St Mary's College student was chosen after more than 40per cent of 11 to 18-year-olds in the area voted.
He pledged to lobby for better sex and relationship education, transport for young people, lowering the voting age to 16, and to make the voices of young people heard.
Minhaz will shadow local councillors, attend council meetings, and talk to youth groups about their views.
Council leader Colin Rigby said: "It's a great sign for the future that so many young people took part in this election. They are our citizens of tomorrow and we should nurture their interest in local democracy and citizenship."
