ORGANISERS of East Lancashire's Race for Life are searching for two women runners to proudly wear numbers one and two for the event.

And those with a special reason for taking part - such as in memory of a departed loved one or a relative or friend who is battling against the disease - could be in the frame to lead off the June 5 and 6 events.

Around 1,400 women have so far signed up for the June 5 dash in Witton Park, Blackburn, with the maximum set at 1,500. For the June 6 race, more than half of the 3,000 places have been snapped up.

Because of rising demand, the race is being held over two days for the first time and will be launched by the new Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Coun Maureen McGarvey.

Jayne Leggatt, from Cancer Research, said: "We are delighted the ladies have been so quick to show their support.

"There are still places available for anyone wishing to take part and I am sure we will have two brilliant evenings."

Entrants can either walk, jog or run the distance.

The closing date for people to enter is June 25.

Last year the event raised more than £132,000 for the cause and organisers are keen to match or beat that total.
