A WOMAN who injured an innocent bystander when she threw a half-pint glass in her local pub has been ordered to pay the victim £500 compensation.

Preston Crown Court was told Joanne Pickering, 20, had not intended to injure anyone when she threw the glass in the Forresters Arms on Shadsworth Road, Blackburn.

Victim Patricia Davies, aged 40, sustained a cut to the bridge of her nose needing seven stitches.

Her nose was also broken and had to be re-set two weeks later.

Pickering of Brownlow Street had been committed for sentence after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding.

She was also given a four month prison sentence suspended for a year, and ordered to do 120 hours unpaid community work and pay costs of £270.

Simon Newell, prosecuting, said the offence took place on February 2 and followed an argument between Pickering and a man over a bar stool.

Ken Hind, defending, said Pickering , who had no previous convictions, had drunk far more than normal.

The incident started as a bit of humour, but then Pickering ruffled the man's hair. "She was intending to throw the contents of the glass at him. In the arm action the glass left her hand. She had no intention to injure the young man or Mrs Davies. She was reckless rather than deliberate," said Mr Hind.

Judge Anthony Russell QC told Pickering: "You may be an intelligent woman, but on February 2 you did not show much sense when you threw this glass."
