TRAINED police negotiators talked a man out of jumping off the old market building in Blackburn town centre.

Officers were called by the man, thought to be in his late 30s, around 4am on Saturday, as he stood on top of the building, off Salford.

After more than two hours gaining the man’s trust, officers persuaded him to step down.

Paramedics were called and the man was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital for a mental health assessment.

A police spokesman said: “The man alerted police himself to his plan around 4am. Specially trained officers attended the scene and after a couple of hours were able to talk him down. I think it was more of a cry for help. He is now receiving medical attention.”
