HASLINGDEN have been hit by a pro blow after classy Kiwi Harry Boam was recalled to New Zealand by his province, the Wellington Firebirds.

The 21-year-old all-rounder has been a big hit at Bentgate in his first season in the Foster’s Lancashire League, two years after his campaign in the Ribblesdale League with Settle.

Boam certainly bowed out on a high as he claimed stunning figures of 6-8 from 12 overs on Sunday as Haslingden skittled derby rivals Bacup for just 34 at Lanehead on a dramatic day.

But he has been recalled home after a rescheduling of fixtures in domestic cricket in New Zealand.

“I have really enjoyed it, apart from the weather,” said Boam. “It is unfortunate that I have been recalled but I take away so many good memories from Haslingden.”

Boam has been handed a central contract by Wellington along with former Church and Nelson professional Luke Woodcock.

Another of Boam’s Firebirds team-mates Jessie Ryder has also been handed a new deal despite a spat with Boam in a Wellington club match in March.

A hearing last week found Ryder guilty of inappropriate behaviour after he reacted to provocation from Boam during the game – and that his conduct in response amounted to unacceptable behaviour.
