A PAINTING destined for a charity shop after being stored for years in a garage is expected to sell for up to £4,000 in an auction next week.

Les Fachdes Sur Le Port, by French artist Marcel Mouly, will go under the hammer on Tuesday along with other notable paintings at Burnley auctioneers Walton & Walton.

The sale, which features work by several Northern artists, will be filmed by the BBC as part of its Antiques Road Trip series.

Steven Parkinson, senior auctioneer and valuer at the firm, said: “A woman from Burnley came in with the Mouly painting saying that it had been stored in a box in the garage for a long period.

“Prior to clearing the garage she had been persuaded by a friend to get it valued and was delighted when she was informed of the prominence of the artist and its true worth.”

The sale also features two pieces by Burnley artist Robert Watson which are expected to sell for hundreds of pounds.

One depicts the old grammar school in the town and the other shows a horse pulling a canal barge on the Leeds and Liverpool canal through the Weavers Triangle.

Another local piece for auction is a painting of a train on Todmorden viaduct by Tom Dodson.

Steven, who is a consultant on the BBC’s Flog It show, says the sale of such a collection of paintings is rare for the area.

He said: “Having so many what we call ‘Northern painters’ together in one sale is exciting for Burnley. Such sales normally only take place in Manchester.”

The auction takes place at Walton & Walton, Parker Street, on Tuesday, from 10am, with viewing on Monday from 10am to 7pm.
