A TINY Pendle school has been given a ticking off - for being too modest.

The telling off' has been handed to the 13-pupil Roughlee CE Primary School in a glowing inspection report from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).

Schools now have to carry out their own assessments prior to inspections and Roughlee headteacher Mrs Carolyn Potts put down that they were only good in some areas.

But after Ofsted inspectors looked around the Roughlee school last month, they said the evaluation was not giving the school enough credit.

The report stressed: "Roughlee is a good school.

"Its own evaluation makes too cautious a judgement about the school's overall effectiveness."

Among the highlights of the report include a praise-laden assessment of Mrs Potts with officials concluding: "The school's success is due to the good leadership and management of the headteacher where the care, safety, well-being, enjoyment and achievement of every individual pupil are at the centre of its work."

The report went on: "Pupils achieve well because teaching is consistently good and provides pupils with the personal and academic skills they need to be successful learners.

"Pupils believe in themselves because the teachers convince them that they can do well."

But it is not just the teachers who won the approval of the team of inspectors.

The report said: "Pupils' love of learning is self-evident as they proudly show their work, talk about what they need to do to improve. They are well behaved, polite, and friendly.

"They get on well with each other and eagerly accept help from teachers and each other.

"They show a mature tolerance, respect and understanding of other faiths and cultures and are aware of the benefits of healthy eating and know how to keep themselves and others safe."

Measures the school is advised improve further include helping pupils discover what they need to do to reach the next level in mathematics and science.

Mrs Potts, who has been at the helm for 13 years, was delighted at the overall findings: She said: "We are really pleased with the outcome of the report.

"We put down in our assessment that we were good at some things but Ofsted have said we were a little too modest and said we were good throughout."
