A 62-year-old man was caught drink-driving after his partner suggested they do the weekly shop - in the early hours.
Burnley Magistrates heard how Colin Howarth had been to the pub the night before but did not think he would be over the limit.
Howarth, of Higher Reedley Road, Brierfield, admitted driving with excess alcohol on July 11.
The defendant, who had no previous convictions, was fined £120, with £50 costs and banned for 12 months.
The court heard how Howarth gave a test which revealed 92 millilitres of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood - the legal limit is 80.
Howarth, who had been behind the wheel at 5.15am, had been asked "unexpectedly" by his partner of 40 years to take her to Asda.
The offence was a "complete miscalculation", said his solicitor Peter King.
The defendant needed his licence for work and his bosses had not been able to offer him alternative employment.
