DRUGS with a street value of more than £5,000 were seized in Burnley as police swooped on several addresses in the town.

During a high profile raid in Saint John's Road, in the Gannow area of Burnley, two addresses were targeted as part of Operation Faun.

The Wednesday night raids on Saint John's Road resulted in the arrests of a 32-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman along with a quantity of heroin and amphetamines.

Officers from the divisional support unit, the special constabulary and the community beat manager PC Andy Uttley took part in the raids.

The special constabulary officers used battering rams to knock open the front doors of the targeted homes in Saint John's Road before officers swarmed into the properties and restrained those inside.

More officers were positioned to the rear of each property to ensure the targets did not escape.

Sergeant Drew Eddleston, of Burnley police, said: "A quantity of heroin and amphetamines was recovered from one of the houses along with what we believe to be stolen property.

"The raids came after complaints from residents about anti-social behaviour in the area."

Operation Faun has been running all week and followed police liaisons with local residents concerned about the high level of suspicious activity surrounding certain addresses in the town.

Along with the raids in Gannow, officers have executed 10 search warrants in the Burnley Wood, Trinity and Rosegrove areas of the town which led to the arrests of 12 people and the seizure of eight vehicles. The operation is ongoing.

Joanne Knox, anti-social behaviour officer, said: "Burnley Council's anti-social behaviour team fully supports the proactive action taken by the police in Gannow.

"Such action demonstrates clearly that local agencies, in conjunction with communities, can take a stand against those that cause misery by committing or allowing their premises to be associated with criminal and anti-social behaviour.

"Such partnership work by agencies with residents will continue."
