WORSTHORNE residents have started a campaign to bring traffic safety measures to the village after a teenager was left fighting for his life.

A petition calling for the introduction of speed restriction measures has attracted scores of residents' names.

It comes after Daniel Wimbles, 16, sustained serious injuries in a car accident on Brownside Road last Monday.

Daniel has been treated at Hope Hospital, Salford, where his family has been keeping a bedside vigil.

The teenager's dad Stuart has also thanked three good Samaritans who gave him first aid at the scene.

Police said yesterday that Daniel's condition was critical.

PC Neil Goodison, of Colne's Road Policing Unit, said: "Daniel is still very poorly. I have been to see the family, who have been keeping a vigil at his bedside and his dad, Stuart, said he wanted to thank all those people who did help at the scene.

"We would like to appeal for any witnesses who saw the incident to contact us."

Denis Howard, owner of The Premier Village Store, Church Square, has a copy of the petition in his shop.

Mr Howard said: "There have been a few occasions over the past couple of years where there has been serious accidents. I remember a taxi running over a girl and another young girl was knocked down.

"I was asked to put this petition in my shop to urge the county council to take action.

"Something does need to be done to prevent it from happening again."

County Councillor for Burnley Rural, Stephen Large, said: "We were up in Worsthorne recently with the engineers from county and cabinet member Tony Martin and parish councillors looking at traffic related issues and it was then that I heard about this accident.

"We are looking what measures can be put in place."

Any witnesses should call Sergeant Gareth Hill on 01282 472431.
