IT'S always reassuring to re-visit an eating establishing that you have previously enjoyed and to find that it has maintained its standards.

There is nothing more disappointing than to arrive full of hope and to leave thinking what has happened there?'

Thankfully The Boatyard at Riley Green does not disappoint. I've remarked before on what a fine job has been done in creating a relaxing, canalside eaterie.

Even at night when the waters of the canal are less visible, clever use of lighting creates an intimate atmosphere and the feeling is one of a cosy place.

There's a decent bar menu with several veggie options or you can sample the carvery which is what we did.

For £8.25 you get your choice of the roasts of the day. Beef, turkey and pork were all available when we went.

Then you can help yourself to the recommended five portions of vegetables from the steam dishes available - in this case, swede and carrots, roast parsnips, sprouts, roast and boiled potatoes.

Add a Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, gravy, apple or cranberry sauce and even some crackling and a bumper plateful is guaranteed.

The problem with some carveries is that the meat is left out for too long and dries up.

But I went for the beef and turkey and both were moist and tender and had retained a lovely flavour.

Everything was also piping hot - which sometimes can be another carvery weakness.

Attentive staff added to the enjoyment of the meal.

Yes, it's good to report The Boatyard is still delivering the goods.
